What makes a golden axolotl gold
A golden axolotl is properly a golden albino. It carries the albino gene, so there is no melanin and the eyes are clear gold or pink rather than dark, but unlike a white albino it also carries iridophores, the reflective cells that produce the yellow to amber colouring and the shimmering flecks along the back.
Colour intensity varies a lot within the morph. Some animals are a soft butter yellow, others push toward a deep amber with a metallic sheen across the shoulders and tail. Juveniles are almost always paler than they will be as adults, so a golden that looks washed out at 10 cm will usually be considerably richer by twelve months.

Living with a golden axolotl
Everything that applies to albinos applies here. The eyes have no protective pigment, so these animals are light sensitive and see poorly. Keep the tank dim, give them a proper hide, and feed with tongs so food reaches the animal rather than sitting on the sand. A golden in a brightly lit tank will spend the day hidden and eat less than it should.
The colour itself is best appreciated under warm, low lighting rather than a bright white lamp, which tends to flatten the amber tones out. A dark substrate makes the gold read far stronger by contrast.
