What makes a mosaic axolotl rare
A mosaic axolotl is not a morph in the usual sense. It is the result of two separately fertilised cells fusing early in development, so the animal grows with two distinct sets of pigment cells in the same body. The outcome is patched, blotched or speckled colouring, often a leucistic base broken up by dark wild type patches, sometimes with gills of two different colours on the same head.
Because it comes from a developmental accident rather than a gene, a mosaic cannot be reproduced. Breeding two mosaics together does not produce mosaic offspring. That is what makes them the rarest axolotl available and why they command the prices they do.
A chimera is the related and even rarer version, where the animal is split cleanly down the midline with one colour on each side. Chimeras are genuinely uncommon and most do not survive to adulthood.
Buying a rare axolotl in Australia
Be careful with the word rare. It gets attached to any animal a seller wants to charge more for. A true mosaic is unmistakable, the patching is bold and irregular and it covers the whole body, not just a few speckles across the shoulders. A lightly speckled leucistic is not a mosaic, and should not be priced as one. If you are unsure, ask for photos from directly above under natural light.

Care for a mosaic axolotl
Identical to any other axolotl. The patterning has no bearing on health or hardiness. Water at 16 to 18 degrees, a cycled and gently filtered tank, fine sand or bare glass, and a hide. Read the tank setup guide first and the care guide for settling in.
One practical note. Because mosaics are expensive and cannot be replaced with an identical animal, they are a poor choice for a first axolotl. Learn on a wild type or a copper and buy the mosaic once your tank has been stable for six months.
