What a copper axolotl looks like

A copper axolotl has a warm brown to caramel body, a paler cream belly and fine dark speckling that usually concentrates across the head and shoulders. The gills are a dusty rose rather than the bright red of a leucistic, which suits the warmer body tone. Eyes are dark or reddish rather than clear.

There are several sub types worth knowing, and we list which one each animal is:

• Standard copper is the classic mid brown with even freckling.
• Axanthic copper lacks yellow pigment, so it sits paler and cooler, closer to a mushroom or taupe tone.
• Honey copper leans golden rather than pink, with an amber body and peach gills.

Buying a copper axolotl in Australia

Coppers are a good value morph. Australian bred juveniles typically run from $85 to $130 AUD, which puts them below leucistics and well below the rarer patterned morphs, without being any less interesting to look at. See the axolotl price in Australia page for the full comparison.

The thing that makes coppers rewarding is that they improve. Unlike a leucistic, which looks much the same at four months and four years, a copper deepens and the contrast between the freckling and the base colour sharpens over the first year. The animal you receive will almost always look better at twelve months than in the photos on its listing.

Tank and care notes

Copper axolotls have normal eyesight, unlike albinos and goldens, so lighting is less critical and they will hunt food across the tank without help. That makes them easier to feed than the albino morphs and a sensible choice for a first axolotl alongside wild types.

Standard requirements otherwise. Keep the water between 16 and 18 degrees, run a cycled filter with gentle flow, use fine sand or a bare base rather than gravel, and provide a hide. A darker substrate brings out the warm tones considerably, while bright white light tends to wash a copper out to a flat beige.
