Ask a question about Scout before you buy. We answer within a business day.

The GFP gene is inherited and completely harmless. You will need a blue or violet torch to see the fluorescence, it is not visible under normal room light.

Scout is a GFP wild type axolotl and one of the best value animals on the site right now. Wild type colouring, so a dark olive body with gold flecking and the natural mottled pattern, but with the GFP gene layered underneath. The result is an animal that looks completely natural by day and glows green under a blue torch at night. There is a distinct dark ring around each eye.

Hardy, straightforward and a sensible choice for a first axolotl. On a pellet and chopped worm diet, feeding reliably every second day. That consistency is the thing we check before an animal travels.

Scout was photographed on its own and priced on its own merits, not to a morph rate card. Express courier to Melbourne, early in the week only, so nothing sits in a depot over a weekend. The price guide covers what each morph costs and what the tank adds on top.

Questions about Scout

Is Scout a good first axolotl?

It can be. Nothing about this morph is harder, the water is what decides it. Brightest through the gills and along the spine, and invisible without a torch in the 395 to 440 nanometre range.

How big will Scout get?

Scout is 10 cm now and should finish between 18 and 25 cm. We do not list below this size. Under it the losses in transit stop being acceptable, whatever the packing.

Can Scout live with another axolotl?

Not yet. At 10 cm Scout would come off worse against anything larger, and axolotls nip gills and limbs when mismatched.
