Copper axolotls deepen in colour over their first year, so the animal you receive will usually be richer toned at twelve months than in these photos.

Freckle is a copper axolotl with noticeably heavier speckling than most of the clutch. The freckling runs the full length of the body rather than stopping at the shoulders, which gives a more textured, dappled look. Gills are a strong dusty pink and sit high on the head. Coppers like this tend to get more striking rather than less as they grow out.

Fast, busy and the first to react when the lid comes off. Plenty of character. Feeding independently on sinking pellets, with chopped earthworm two or three times a week for condition.

How big will Freckle get?

Freckle is 10 cm now and should finish between 18 and 25 cm. Ten centimetres is the point where an axolotl stops being fragile and starts being straightforward.

Can Freckle live with another axolotl?

Not yet. At 10 cm Freckle would come off worse against anything larger, and axolotls nip gills and limbs when mismatched.
