A dark sand bed is what makes a black axolotl look black. Pale gravel and hard lighting flatten the animal into an even grey.

Pepper is an axanthic black axolotl and the busiest animal in the grey group. Uniform grey body, pale underside, and gill stalks that flush noticeably pinker after a feed. This is a good example of why axanthics photograph so well, the lack of yellow pigment means the colour stays true rather than shifting green under different lights.

Food driven and quick off the mark. One of the first to the front of the tub at feeding time. On soft sinking salmon pellets with chopped earthworm two or three times a week. Feeding is confirmed on the morning of dispatch.

Is Pepper a good first axolotl?

It can be. Nothing about this morph is harder, the water is what decides it. Plan the tank around the animal here: dark substrate, moderate lighting, and the charcoal tone holds.

How big will Pepper get?

Pepper is 10 cm now and should finish between 18 and 25 cm. At that size the gills are fully developed and the animal has the reserves for a day in transit.

Can Pepper live with another axolotl?

Not yet. At 10 cm Pepper would come off worse against anything larger, and axolotls nip gills and limbs when mismatched.
