Axanthic and melanoid animals hold their colour best in a tank with a dark substrate and moderate lighting. Bright white light tends to wash the grey out.

Smokey is an axanthic black axolotl with the flat, smoky grey tone that gives this morph its name. Axanthics carry no yellow pigment at all, so where a wild type looks olive and speckled, Smokey reads as clean charcoal from nose to tail. The gills are a soft dusty pink that lifts beautifully against the darker body, and they colour up more under low light than under a bright lamp.

A steady, unhurried animal that spends most of the day parked under a hide and comes out the moment food hits the water. Takes pellets straight off the sand and chopped worm from tongs. No coaxing needed, which is what we look for before listing.
