Ask a question about Slate before you buy. We answer within a business day.
Slate is an axanthic black axolotl, one of the more evenly coloured of the grey morphs we have raised this season. There is very little tonal variation across the body, which is what you want in a good axanthic. The gill stalks are long and well branched, and the filaments sit forward rather than swept back, which usually points to good water quality and a fish that has never been stressed.
Curious rather than skittish. This one comes to the front of the glass when you walk past instead of bolting for cover. Eating soft sinking pellets and chopped earthworm, and holding good body condition on it. We confirm a feed before any animal is packed.
Once Slate is sold this page comes down rather than being reused for the next animal. Goes out early in the week and arrives overnight in Melbourne. For what the whole setup costs on top, read axolotl prices in Australia.
Questions about Slate
How big will Slate get?
Slate is 10 cm now and should finish between 18 and 25 cm. It has passed the stage where a small mistake in water quality is fatal, which is why we list from here.
Can Slate live with another axolotl?
Not yet. At 10 cm Slate would come off worse against anything larger, and axolotls nip gills and limbs when mismatched.
Is Slate still available?
Slate is available as of today. Against pale gravel a dark animal reads as a silhouette. Dark sand and soft light bring the face back.
