The fluorescent protein sits in the tissue and does nothing else. No special care, no shorter life, no difference in feeding.

Ember is a GFP copper axolotl, carrying the green fluorescent protein gene over a warm copper base. In daylight this animal simply reads as a good copper. Put a blue or violet torch on the tank at night and the whole body lights up a soft green, brightest through the gills and along the spine. The GFP trait is inherited, not a treatment or a dye, and it has no effect on the animal.

Eats with real enthusiasm and handles the net without fuss. Currently eating soft sinking salmon pellets and chopped earthworm, and taking both readily. We do not send an animal that is not feeding on its own.

Questions about Ember

Is Ember a good first axolotl?

Yes. The morph is not the difficult part, the first month of water chemistry is. A white torch will not show it and neither will a bright room. It has to be blue or violet light.

How big will Ember get?

Ember is 10 cm now and should finish between 18 and 25 cm. That is the size we consider ready to travel, grown enough to handle a day in a box.

Can Ember live with another axolotl?

Not yet. At 10 cm Ember would come off worse against anything larger, and axolotls nip gills and limbs when mismatched.
